The Insect Collection of the ETH comprises two million insect specimens, among them several hundred first time descriptions (-> Types).

Scientists
from all over Europe visit the ETH Collection and exchange specimens to
document the biodiversity of species in a given region, to improve
understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of species or to compile
monographs.
The ETH Collection received and
continues to receive donations of valuable collections documenting
specific insect groups mainly from the palearctic, but also from other
regions including the tropics (-> Individual Collections).
As a consequence, recent scientific
achievements are documented side-by-side with historical collections
dating back as far as 1800; the first donation by the family Escher
comprising 60'000 specimens of 22'000 different species has been
accepted by the Swiss Federal Council back in 1858. Today, the ETH
Collection is intensively used by diploma and PhD students as well as by
the national and international scientific community.
